Valuable tips for shower enthusiasts

The interiors market offers a wide range of products in terms of models and the materials used to make them. Choosing the most suitable shower tray should take into account not only individual preferences and budget, but also other, equally important factors. Chief among these are technical feasibility, i.e. the location of the waste outlet and the height of the connection to the drainage system. These usually determine the final dimensions and shape of the shower tray you buy, which can come in various colours and be made of steel, acrylic, composite or so‑called cast marble. Visual aspects are therefore entirely chosen to suit the user’s taste.

Installing a shower tray – what does it look like in practice?

In purely technical terms, during a renovation the simplest solution is to place the new tray where the previous one was, taking into account the position of the drainage inlet and the location of the waste outlet. When designing a new home, however, there are far more options available.

Installing a low-profile tray, a high tray (on polystyrene, a special frame or adjustable legs), or a stone‑resin one differs significantly. Compact-type trays are most often installed directly on the floor. It does happen, though, that instead the tray is recessed into the screed to the height of the tiles. This usually occurs when the drain and the entire installation are located very low. It gives the effect of a so‑called threshold-free shower enclosure. Meanwhile, a deep 90×90 shower tray works well when the inlet to the drainage system is positioned much higher. Although most models can be placed on the floor screed, this is not always a good solution. The main reason is water penetrating into walls and floors, causing mould and mildew. To prevent this, it’s worth learning the key points about correctly positioning and installing a shower tray.

How and where should you install a shower tray?

An important issue to pay particular attention to is the location of the shower tray. During a renovation, the most appropriate solution is to place it where the previous one was. When designing an interior from scratch, however, you can freely decide on the most advantageous layout of all bathroom fittings. Even without a predefined spot, it’s worth placing the shower enclosure against a wall, in a corner or in a recess, necessarily close to the drainage inlet, and, to avoid future problems, on a screed finished with ceramic tiles.

Another very important aspect is fitting the trap to the tray. It should be matched to the flexible pipe and connected to the drainage system right at the start, taking care with the seals, which, if bent and deformed, could lead to leaks in the future. A pipe that is too long can be cut with a hacksaw. Remember, replacing the trap in the shower tray during a bathroom renovation is crucial!

Choosing a shower tray to suit individual preferences

Leaving aside purely technical issues, the user can tailor the remaining parameters to their own preferences. In terms of type, you can choose between shallow and deep trays. Taking the bathroom space and your own vision of the interior into account, you can opt for square, rectangular, quadrant (quarter‑circle plan) or asymmetrical forms. The choice of shape and dimensions should also be well thought out because, to ensure maximum bathing comfort, it must take into account the build of other people who will use it.

A bathroom tailored to you

You will have noticed that installing a shower tray is not very complicated, and its selection should be based mainly on your preferences. If you prioritise functionality, a deeper one will be ideal, as it offers more possibilities. If, on the other hand, you want the bathing area to look more contemporary, order a low-profile or stone‑resin tray, which primarily serves as a decorative feature.
