Where to hang your towel by the washbasin? Here’s our advice!

I don’t think anyone likes walking into the bathroom to wash their hands only to find there isn’t a towel within arm’s reach. When you have to go looking for towels, gather them from laundry baskets or—worse!—off the floor and out of other nooks and crannies of the bathroom, all the joy of being there evaporates. And after all, this space feels cozy when it’s functional, too. So where should you hang a towel by the sink, in a convenient spot, so it’s always close at hand?

Hardly anyone likes to walk into the bathroom to wash their hands only to discover there isn’t a towel within arm’s reach. When you have to go hunting for towels, gather them from laundry baskets or – worse still! – from the floor and other nooks of the bathroom, all the enjoyment of being in there evaporates. And this space feels cosy precisely when it is functional. So where should you hang a towel by the washbasin, in a convenient spot, so it’s always to hand?

Bathroom functionality and towel holders

For such an intimate space, which a bathroom undoubtedly is, to work smoothly while exuding cosiness from every corner, it should be properly arranged. This means not only dealing with issues related to the bathroom’s aesthetics. Above all, it’s about the appropriate selection and placement of all the fixtures and accessories necessary for it to function as it should.

A towel holder by the washbasin is just such an accessory. Position it in the right spot and you won’t even have to think about it, because your hand will instinctively reach for it. Place it a little farther than it should be, or somewhere entirely impractical, and you’ll spend anxious minutes hunting for it as you rush off to work. Towel holders should therefore be located very close to the washbasin, so that water dripping from wet hands doesn’t have time to fall to the floor.

It should be noted, however, that a towel holder in a small bathroom is positioned somewhat differently than in a larger room. There’s functional logic to everything, because limited space forces certain solutions. And that’s where the challenge lies! Where should you hang a towel in a small bathroom, and where in a large one?

Where to place functional towel holders

When the space around the washbasin allows, it’s worth fitting holders right next to it, on the same wall it sits against. Which side doesn’t really matter when space isn’t a constraint.

How do you hang towels in a small bathroom? The towel by the washbasin in a small bathroom should, if possible, be placed right beside it. If there’s no room on either side, you’ll need to move the holder to the adjacent wall. Also pay attention to the door near the washbasin. You can use its surface, provided you opt for holders that don’t require drilling.

When the bathroom isn’t large but the washbasin is a countertop bowl model, towels in a small bathroom can simply be placed under the basin’s worktop. In the case of a built-in washbasin with a cabinet, you can easily fix the holders to its side panel.

Towels in a small bathroom – freestanding or wall-mounted?

A small bathroom means little space. Inevitably, it’s harder to fit the freestanding towel holders that have been very popular for many years. They have undeniable charm and enhance the look of the whole room, but in small bathrooms they may not pass the test. In larger ones they really come into their own, look beautiful and don’t take up much space.

Both in small and large bathrooms, wall-mounted holders work brilliantly. They can essentially be divided into two basic categories – stuck onto the wall and fixed to the wall. The difference is that a holder stuck onto the wall is usually attached with adhesive or a suction cup. The upside is quick and simple installation; the downside is that such holders often fall off under the weight of heavier, damp towels.

Holders fixed to the wall require slightly more invasive installation methods, but their undeniable advantages include resistance to the weight of wet towels and non-standard design. They can take fanciful or simple forms, be very large or suitably smaller, so in addition to functionality they have great aesthetic potential.

That’s how the question of where to hang a towel by the washbasin in the bathroom shapes up. The rules are similar in all of them, big and small: the holder should be close to the washbasin, not take up much space and, above all, not get in the way, making it easier to use the bathroom at any time of day!
