Find out how to look after chrome taps to avoid scratches and discolouration.

Causes of scratches on stainless steel

Scratches on stainless steel can appear for many reasons. When it comes to basin taps, the most common causes are:

  • everyday use — regularly using items made of stainless steel leads to fine scratches that you may not even notice at first;
  • improper cleaning and maintenance — using overly abrasive sponges or abrasive cleaning agents can damage the surface;
  • using the wrong cleaning tools — wire brushes and sharp tools can leave permanent marks on stainless steel.

How to prevent scratches?

To prevent scratches on stainless steel, it’s worth following a few simple rules:

  • ensure proper cleaning — always use soft sponges or microfibre cloths to clean the surfaces of basin taps. Avoid wire brushes and tools that are too hard;
  • choose the right cleaning products — use gentle cleaners designed for stainless steel. Avoid abrasive products that can damage the surface;
  • keep up with regular maintenance — regular cleaning and maintenance will help keep your basin tap in good condition for a long time.

Home remedies for removing scratches from chrome

If scratches have appeared on your chrome bathroom taps, don’t worry! There are effective, at-home ways to remove them. What’s more, you can do it with products you probably already have at home. What exactly should you use?

To remove scratches from chrome basin taps, you can use:

  • a bicarbonate of soda paste — bicarbonate of soda is a great cleaner that can help remove fine scratches, particularly those caused by streaking. Simply mix bicarbonate of soda with a little water to make a paste. Then gently rub the paste into the scratch with a soft cloth, before rinsing and drying the surface;
  • toothpaste — ordinary toothpaste (not gel) can also help remove minor scratches. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and gently rub into the scratch using circular motions. Then rinse the toothpaste off with water and dry the surface;
  • vinegar and olive oil — vinegar is an excellent cleaner that can help with minor abrasions. Mix vinegar with olive oil in a 1:1 ratio. Apply the mixture to the scratch and gently rub with a soft cloth. Then rinse and dry the surface.

Remember to always test each method on a small, inconspicuous area. This way you can be sure it won’t cause additional damage to your tap.
