At what height should bathroom taps be fitted?

A shower, bathtub or washbasin — these are elements no bathroom should be without. However, to make using them fully practical and functional, you should ensure the shower mixer tap and the bath mixer tap are set at the right height. So, what measurements will be the most suitable? We’ve got the answers!

Shower, bath or basin – these are elements that no bathroom should be without. However, to make using them fully practical and functional, you should make sure that the height of the shower tap and the bath tap is appropriate. So what dimensions will be the most suitable? We’ll guide you!

What should be the height of the shower tap from the floor?

First and foremost, you should base the installation height on the average height of the household members who will most often use the shower. The optimal solution is a height of 110 to 130 centimetres, measured from the floor.

This option means that practically every user (regardless of height) has easy access to the tap. At the same time, you gain enough space to move freely. There is one more issue to consider – if there are people in the household with significant mobility limitations, it is worth considering installing the shower tap at a height of 80 centimetres.

Bath tap height

As a rule, a bath is also fitted with a tap with a shower handset. This solution is very functional. Thanks to it you can easily rinse the bath after bathing or cleaning, and when you are short of time, you can also take a quick shower. In such a case the bath tap should be installed at least 10-18 centimetres above the top edge of the bath, measured from the rim. That gives about 60 centimetres from the floor.

Is your bath combined with a glass screen and also intended to serve as a shower enclosure? In that case you will also need a handset holder or a rain shower head. The latter is best placed 210-220 centimetres from the floor. This will allow you to make full use of the potential and advantages of a rain shower and showering under it. In the case of a ceiling-mounted rain shower head, it is the room height that determines its distance from the user.

As for the installation height of the handset holder, you should adjust it to the height of the household members. Remember that it would be good for the handset always to be slightly above the user’s head, 20-30 centimetres is enough. Adjustable holders are a good solution, letting you easily adapt the handset height to the needs of individual household members.

Installing a concealed basin tap

The installation height of a concealed basin tap largely depends on the height at which you have installed the basin. It is assumed that the standard height for a bathroom basin is 75-85 centimetres. Therefore, it is always worth installing the concealed basin tap 25-35 centimetres above the rim of the basin. This way you will guarantee users freedom of movement during daily grooming, and if you want to do some hand washing, this height will also work well.

Freestanding taps

Freestanding baths and countertop basins are also growing in popularity. As a rule, with this type of sanitaryware, to fully exploit their aesthetic potential, freestanding taps are installed.

The advantage of this solution is that such a bathroom tap can be installed practically anywhere by the given fixture. Freestanding taps stand out not only visually. They are also very functional and, among other things, offer high stability.

The same applies to basins mounted on a countertop. A freestanding tap helps highlight the design aspect and generally gives much greater scope to arrange the surrounding space.

Comfort and ease above all

Whether it’s a bath, basin or shower tap, one thing matters most – when installing them, prioritise functionality and convenience. Therefore, take into account who will most often use the washing area, and adjust the height of the tap from the floor to the height of the household members.

This way you will create a practical bathing area in which both adults and children will feel at ease. So choose the best option for you and enjoy an ergonomic place to wash.
