In every bathroom we find a few essentials we simply can’t do without. One of them is a mirror hung above the washbasin. Which mirror model should you choose? What should you be guided by to pick the best one? And most importantly – at what height should you hang it? Here’s our advice!
Bath or shower, toilet, washbasin, and above it a mirror – such a setup is essential for a bathroom to serve its purpose. It’s hard to dispute the need for installing a bath or a toilet, but is a mirror truly indispensable? The answer is simple – absolutely yes! Bathroom mirror plays an important role, both practically and aesthetically.
How else could we perform the simplest grooming routines every morning? A mirror hung above the washbasin lets you make sure you’re not leaving the house with toothpaste on your face, uneven make-up or not properly shaved. What’s more, its presence makes the bathroom look larger, brighter and therefore more spacious. It’s worth choosing the right model for your bathroom and enjoying the benefits it provides.
Choosing the right type of bathroom mirror isn’t difficult; just follow a few guidelines that work brilliantly here. What exactly? The first aspect is certainly the size of the bathroom, which will to some extent dictate the mirror’s dimensions.
What mirror for a small bathroom, and what for a large one? In a compact space, a small-sized mirror is a good solution: it won’t overwhelm the room, yet will make it feel a little bigger. In a larger space, you should opt for a large bathroom mirror – one that won’t get lost among other elements. Bear in mind, however, that the dimensions you choose should primarily meet the needs of the people who will be using it. It’s worth considering what size the mirrors you previously used were and whether they were big enough.
The mirror’s design is equally important. It needs to match the other elements of the bathroom so that the whole has a cohesive feel. There are round, square, rectangular and asymmetrical options available. Each will suit a different space, completing it beautifully. Pay attention to ornamentation, too – some mirrors, instead of a classic, subtle frame, have a very decorative one, for example woven from rope or a geometric metal frame. Strap-hung mirrors are also an interesting option and are sure to impress not only all household members but every guest who visits.
How high should you hang a mirror? This question often troubles those renovating or just fitting out their bathrooms. The height at which the bathroom mirror is hung will determine how practical it is in use. As a rule of thumb, the minimum height measured from the floor to the bottom edge of the mirror should be approx. 1.2 m, and the top edge around 2 m. These aren’t rigid rules – they’re suggestions to be adjusted to the height of household members. If there are children at home, consider hanging it slightly lower.
This is worth considering as well, as it will make it easier to keep the mirror clean. A mirror positioned directly behind the washbasin will be much more prone to splashes than one set a little higher. For this reason, a mounting height of around 20–30 cm above the washbasin is recommended.
Once you’ve chosen the right mirror and hung it at the proper height, you should also think about selecting suitable lighting. The main light source may prove insufficient, so additional wall lights around the mirror are a good solution. Combining all these elements will make the bathroom as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing – a space you’ll be happy to use.
