Installing a walk-in shower requires a linear drain that will effectively collect water and keep it from escaping the designated area. Installing a walk-in shower requires a linear drain that will effectively collect water, preventing it from escaping the designated area. Do you like this type of solution in the bathroom, but you’re not keen on the so-called “envelope” fall? All is not lost! An envelope fall in the shower isn’t your only option. What are your possibilities? We’re happy to advise – read on!
An envelope fall in the shower is one method of installing a linear drain. The tiles in the shower are laid so that their joints mimic the shape of an envelope converging around the drain. This way, water naturally flows into it, without leaving the designated area. Such an envelope fall requires cutting several tiles into smaller pieces, which in turn creates areas that need grouting. Not a fan of this type of solution because its aesthetics don’t appeal to you? You don’t have to give up on a walk-in shower – simply choose a different way of installing the drain.
Linear drain without an envelope can be installed by creating a single fall direction in the shower area. With this approach, you’ll avoid forming an envelope and, therefore, numerous tile cuts around the drain. You can do this in two ways: by using a linear drain that is 10–15 cm shorter than the shower enclosure, or by using a wall linear drain spanning the full width of the shower.
Both installation methods involve laying the tiles in the shower so they create a fall in a single direction – towards the drain. As a result, the entire shower floor drops uniformly, which translates into a more refined look overall. This solution also reduces the number of grout joints, which could otherwise get dirty quickly, thereby spoiling the overall design. And if you additionally choose a linear drain model that allows a tile insert, it will become almost invisible.
To enjoy a stylish yet functional shower, you must first ensure the drain is installed correctly. Fitted properly, it will provide effective water removal, thereby preserving functionality and the comfort of using the shower. What’s worth bearing in mind?
Choosing the right linear drain model is the key step without which a walk-in shower will not succeed. In terms of options, there are two – you can opt for a drain approx. 20 cm shorter than the shower floor and fill the remaining length with infill cuts from the floor tiles, or choose a model that spans the full width of the shower. In the latter case, you’ll need to ensure the drain fits the shower recess perfectly. Base the choice on your aesthetic preferences – both will perform equally well.
The floor fall towards the linear drain in the shower is crucial for proper drainage and avoiding standing water. The most commonly recommended gradient is around 2–2.5% – naturally towards the drain.
To achieve this, prepare the substrate accordingly. If necessary, lightly break out and level the substrate so that the tiles laid on it later both look good and shed water effectively.
After preparing the substrate, install the drain following the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure all connections are watertight – be sure to test them by pouring water into the drain. If everything is in order, it’s time to lay the tiles. Finally, fit the linear drain cover/grate and you’re done!
A walk-in shower combines ease of use with striking aesthetics. Don’t worry about the perceived difficulty of installing a linear drain within it. Opt for simpler single-fall solutions and stop worrying about how to form an envelope fall in such builds!
