Is your bathroom lacking greenery? Have you decided to liven up the space with plants? Before you bring any into this room, make sure it’s the right place for those particular plants. Which should you choose? Where should you put them so they look stunning while not getting in the way? We’ve got some pointers below!

Plants in the bathroom — is it a good idea?

Plants, no matter which room they’re placed in, create an amazing ambience. They suit any style and colour scheme and are a great way to breathe life into any arrangement. So it’s no surprise that, just as often as in the living room or bedroom, you’ll also find them in bathrooms. Are plants in the bathroom a good idea? Absolutely! You just need to remember to choose the right ones.

Natural or artificial plants for the bathroom?

One of the most common dilemmas when buying plants for a bathroom is whether to go for live or artificial. There are many factors every plant lover needs to consider. Don’t choose certain plants for the bathroom just because you like them or they fit the dimensions of the space you’re decorating. It may turn out they won’t stand the test of time. The most important criterion should be the conditions in your bathroom.

Which plants for a windowless bathroom?

A plant for a bathroom without a window needs to tolerate a lack of light for most of the day. So if you’re set on live plants, choose shade-loving species. Which plants should you pick for a dark bathroom? Among live options, peace lily, fern and anthurium will do well. They’re ideal for a dark bathroom because they love humidity and don’t mind the lack of constant light.

However, if you dream of completely different plants for a dark, windowless bathroom but know they wouldn’t survive in a dim, humid room, artificial alternatives will be a better solution. Artificial plants will look beautiful all year round despite the lack of sunlight, and you won’t have to remember to water them. What’s more — in this version you can have any species of plant in the bathroom.

Which plants for a bathroom with a window?

Having a window in the bathroom greatly expands your styling options when it comes to greenery. In such a space, plants that like diffused light and high humidity will thrive. These include, among others, the striking monstera, calathea, epipremnum and spider plant.

Where should you place plants in the bathroom?

Where you place plants in the bathroom will largely depend on whether they’re live or artificial. That’s not the only factor, though — obviously the available space you can allocate to them matters, too.

Place live, light-loving plants simply on the windowsill, for example. Set larger specimens, such as a monstera, on the floor near the window or opposite it — so that sunlight reaches them. You’ll have much more freedom with artificial plants.

Small specimens work brilliantly, for example, as the perfect decoration on bathroom shelves. Placed near folded towels, beneath a mirror or beside a basket full of cosmetics, they’ll become a lovely accent that’s sure to catch the eye of anyone using the bathroom. And what’s more — a touch of greenery will make the room feel cosier, helping every member of the household relax even more during an evening bath.

Plants in the bathroom can also be used to add interest to the space around the toilet, for example. Have you got a boxed-in concealed cistern? Storing toilet rolls on it is certainly practical, but is it attractive? Move the toilet paper to a cupboard and, in its place, set a tasteful potted plant on the boxed-in frame. The space will undoubtedly look more inviting.
