A linear drain: https://lazienka-rea.com.pl/prysznicowe-odplywy-liniowe.html also saves space, as you can use it in place of a traditional shower enclosure with a tray. If you want to learn how to install a linear drain correctly, this article is for you!

What is a linear drain?

A linear drain is a component whose primary function is to carry away water. It is most commonly used as a substitute for a standard floor waste. Linear drains are a popular solution, used above all in bathrooms with a modern design. This is because more and more people are opting for walk-in showers without a tray. In this way they gain more space and freedom in arranging the room.

Linear drain – installation step by step

The first step is to check whether there are any technical obstacles that would prevent you from installing a linear drain. It is worth knowing that, depending on the manufacturer, the built-in assembly typically takes up 70–80 mm in height.

If you are not an experienced professional, opt for a ready-made installation kit. However, the choice should not be random. Pay particular attention to the drain’s maximum flow rate and compare it with the flow rate of the shower head. Equally important is the build quality, which affects the price of the kit. If you want long-term reliability, choose a kit from a higher price bracket. This way you will avoid frequent and costly repairs. Also check the height of the drain body with trap — the lower it is, the easier it will be to fit it into the floor.

How to set a linear drain?

The next step is to prepare the waste connection. Remember that the linear drain should be positioned higher than the point where the waste connection is made. You can set the linear drain in the wall or in the floor. In the latter case, it is best to place it directly under the shower panel.

The linear drain grate is essentially a cover strip. It should be set so that the water-draining grate is 1 mm below the level of the floor tiles. Once this is done, you can proceed to install the drain body. Remember to check that it is seated correctly. Use a spirit level for this.

Preparing the screed

Ideally, when installing the linear drain the floor should still be before the screed is poured. Then, at the location intended for the drain, you should chisel out a hole with a depth suited to the size of the drain. Next you can start preparing the screed. At this stage be sure to allow for the difference in height between the floor and the drain. This will ensure that water runs towards the drain without flooding the entire room.

When preparing the screed, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, which will certainly be included with your installation kit in the form of instructions.

Waterproofing

This is the final stage of installing a linear drain. To ensure proper substrate isolation, apply a liquid waterproofing membrane over it. This substance is designed to seal and protect surfaces against unwanted water ingress. After applying each coat, wait 2–3 hours for the membrane to dry.

During this step, remember to install the flange supplied with the drain body. This component ensures the stability of the waterproofing.

Height of the shower mixer with a linear drain

At what height should you mount the shower mixer with a linear drain? This is an individual matter, closely linked to the height of the members of your household. The most universal solution is installation at a height of 110 to 135 cm above the floor.

Linear drain – how far from the wall?

The decision regarding the distance of the linear drain from the wall should be dictated by the total length of the channel. The distance from the wall should be 2–3 cm greater on each side than the length of the drain itself.
