A bidet is an extremely useful appliance that provides a high level of hygiene and comfort. More and more people are considering installing this type of device in their bathroom, but worry that the installation process may turn out to be too complicated to carry out on their own. In this article, we show how to install a bidet smoothly and safely, without having to call in a professional.

Why is it worth connecting a bidet?

A bidet is a sanitary appliance designed primarily for intimate hygiene. In most European homes this type of fitting is found as a separate ceramic bathroom fixture, although in many countries in Asia and South America it also appears as an additional functional element of the toilet, mounted directly next to the WC.

The main function of bidets is to provide readily accessible personal hygiene, as well as to make washing easier and more comfortable for people with reduced mobility or health issues. If you feel less than fresh, a bidet can replace the need to take a shower, especially when you’re on the go. In doing so, the appliance helps save on water bills – good for the environment and your wallet.

How to install a bidet? Essential tips

Although installing a bidet may seem complicated, in reality it is quite straightforward. As long as you have access to hot and cold water and a waste outlet, the appliance is installed similarly to a toilet, but without an additional cistern. To make the task easier, choose a wall-hung bidet with the waste outlet going into the wall rather than the floor. This model also makes cleaning the bathroom easier and takes up slightly less space.

What do you need to install a bidet?

Before you start installing a wall-hung or floor-standing bidet yourself, make sure you have the necessary tools to hand. You will need:

  • A cordless drill
  • A tile drill bit
  • A laser level
  • Eye protection
  • A tape measure
  • A pencil
  • An adjustable spanner
  • Silicone sealant

In addition, you should have to hand the appropriate water valves, stainless steel braided hoses, and any other mounting components included with the fittings.

Bidet – installation dimensions

The recommended installation height for a bidet is around 400 mm above the floor. Before installation, make sure the spacing of the mounting bolts in the frame and the holes in the appliance is the same. Standards allow for two sizes: 18 cm or 23 cm.

How to connect a bidet? Step-by-step instructions

First: Choose a location for the bidet

The bidet is usually positioned next to the toilet. It’s worth leaving at least 20 cm of free space on both accessible sides of the fixture. The most comfortable use is ensured by a distance of 40 cm from other bathroom fittings. Install the bidet with its back to the wall.

Second: Install the supply and valves

Installing the pipes that supply water to the bidet is similar to connecting hot and cold water to a bathroom basin. The difference is that for a bidet the supplies should be about 20 cm above the floor, or as per the manufacturer’s specifications. For a wall-hung bidet, installing a concealed frame is also necessary. Next, fit elbows or valves (depending on the bidet model) to the water inlets.

Third: Install the trap and tap

Installing the tap is similar to what you do when fitting a basin. If you have installed a basin against a wall before, it should not be difficult. When buying a trap, make sure its type is suitable for your bidet – traps for floor-standing and wall-hung bidets differ significantly in design.

Fourth: Fix the bidet in place

Secure the bidet to the floor or wall according to the enclosed instructions. If you purchased a unit with a frame, all the necessary components should be included in the set. Remember to choose a drill bit suitable for working with bathroom tiles. Don’t forget to seal the base of the ceramic with silicone.

Fifth: Connect the water to the bidet

Once the components are connected, check the entire installation for leaks. If any parts do not fit properly, replace them. If you don’t, serious leaks can appear quickly.

We hope the tips above have shown you how to install a bidet. If, however, you still have any doubts, consult a professional. Doing the job correctly will reduce the risk of breakdowns and ensure comfortable use for years to come!
